Tropical Fruit World and Native Bee Technical Tour

Date: Wednesday 27th June
Time: Departs 9.30am and returns approx. 4pm (lunch included)

Tropical Fruit World is located south of the 3rd Australian Bee Congress site and offers a great opportunity for congress delegates to visit an exceptional facility featuring tropical fruits, enjoy a tasting of the fruits and a tour of the site. The unique opportunity this tour affords is that of a 1.5-hour demonstration and address on the marvels of Native Bees by Dr Tim Heard, one of Australia’s foremost researchers into these fascinating bees. The tour will depart Royal Pines Resort at 9.30am on Wednesday 27th June, and return at approx. 4pm. Lunch is included in the cost of $90.

Dr Tim Heard has offered to accompany the group on the tour bus and will be available to interact with you during the entire day. What an amazing opportunity! You will find him very personable and interesting to talk to, quickly realising that you have a living legend in your midst!

Introduction to Dr Tim Heard: Dr Tim Heard is an entomologist and native bee researcher. In 35 years of beekeeping he has rescued and bred thousands of colonies of stingless bees. He regularly presents workshops and seminars, talks on radio and is the author of multi award winning and best-selling “The Australian Native Bee Book”. At this event, Tim will show living hives of native bees and talk about how they live, how they can be hived, how the hives are propagated, along with hive design and management. www.sugarbag.net

High Tea

Welcome Drinks and Meet the Guest Speakers

Date: Wednesday 27th June
Time: : 5.30pm – 7.30pm
Location: Hydrate Bar, RACV Royal Pines Resort
Cost: $50 per person (one ticket is included in full congress registration fee)

An opportunity to catch up with industry colleagues, and meet some of the congress guest speakers. Finger food and a drink voucher will be provided. Additional drinks can be purchased.

Kids n Bees

Date: Thursday 28th June
Time: TBC
Location: Convention Lobby, RACV Royal Pines Resort
Cost: Free of charge to school age children whose parent/guardian is attending the congress. Younger children are welcome to attend if accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Kids and Bees has been designed to further educate students in Years 3 and 4 (Stage 2) about the importance of bees to us and our environment. Kids and Bees will be extended to any school age children whose parents are attending the conference. Activities will include the reading and sharing of a variety of books about bees, factual/ fiction, possible viewing of a video about bees, honey tasting, bees in the beehive (students to place queen, drones and workers in a hive simulation), plaster of paris bee moulds to paint, make small rolled beeswax candles and bee activity sheets reinforcing words relating to bees, (find a word, crosswords), labelling the body parts of bees. Students will be able to take their completed work with them, further reinforcing the importance of bees. Around the room for this activity will be bee equipment, eg boxes, frames, smoker etc, yellow lanterns transformed into bee hives, and fact sheets about bees and honey.

Connecting Young Beekeepers

Location: Norfolk Room,  RACV Royal Pines Resort
Cost: No charge

Introducing a panel session on pathways to building a successful business in beekeeping. An opportunity for younger participants to hear first-hand insights into key areas of the apiary industry. Panel members will include representatives from the banking sector; honey packing supply chain; pollination sector as well as an established beekeeper.

Trade Show Evening Function

Date: Thursday 28th June
Time: : 6.00pm – 9.00pm
Location: Trade Exhibition Area, RACV Royal Pines Resort
Cost: $50 per person (one ticket is included in full congress registration fee)

An evening function to meet the exhibitors and explore the extensive trade show. Finger food and a drink voucher will be provided. Additional drinks can be purchased.

Beekeeper Breakfast

Date: Friday 29th June
Time: 7.00am – 8.45am
Location: Convention Lobby, RACV Royal Pines Resort
Cost: $40 per person

The Beekeeper Breakfast is an optional extra, recommended for beekeeping operations with more than 400 hives. Includes buffet breakfast, guest speaker and panel discussion. Numbers are limited.

Congress Dinner

Cost: $120 per person

The Congress Dinner is an optional extra, and includes a 3 course meal. Drinks will be available to purchase.

Australian Outback Spectacular Evening

Volvo and Steritech Technical Tour

Date: Wednesday 27th June
Time: 8.00am – 5.00pm (approx.)
Location: Return coach transfer from RACV Royal Pines Resort
Cost: $75 per person (strictly limited to 48 participants)

The Technical Tour is an optional extra, and is not included in the registration fees. The tour will visit Steritech Pty Ltd and Volvo Truck Production Australia, with a stop for lunch at Mount Coot-tha (at own expense). Both site visits will be of special interest to beekeepers. At the Volvo Truck manufacturing centre at Wacol, participants will observe the manufacture of a truck. At the Steritech Gamma Irradiation plant, participants will enjoy a presentation on the use of Gamma Irradiation to eliminate current contamination in beekeeping equipment. The source will be raised (not out of the water) for you to observe as you walk through the “source”. Tour numbers are strictly limited to 48 participants in total (two tours of 24 participants). Due to the industrial nature of both facilities, unfortunately children are not able to join the technical tour.
